In esports and gaming we like to complain that our audience is difficult to monetize. But isn’t the reality that the value that is offered often doesn’t hit the mark?

I too have said it myself plenty of times over my years in the esports trenches, but sometimes you have to step out of something to understand it better, and having spent the last two years taking a birds eye view through both ELO and investing, I managed to change my perspective a bit.

Around 70% of Gen Z and Millennials pay for a monthly streaming subscription. 50% attends at least two concerts per year. Compare this versus the 7% of esports fans attending esports events per year and you begin to wonder. We have a whole new generation of wealth thanks to social platforms such as Twitch, YouTube, Instagram and plenty of others, funded by the same audience which watches esports.

This all points to that Gen Z and Millennials are willing to open their wallet, but only if they believe in what you represent and what you offer. Really think about the value that you are offering and if that is something worth charging for.

We often talk about PMF in a very robotic way, but when you bring in the emotion (why do you do this?) and by building something that really resonates with your core community, revenue is more likely to follow. Don’t copy what’s done simply because that’s how it has always been done, but have the meaningful interaction (which means mostly listening) with the community and becoming one of them, you’ll know what is right and what isn’t.
